Hadith and Narrations about Nature and the Environment:

1- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : اِزرَعُوا و اغرِسُوا وَاللَّهِ ما عَمِلَ النّاسُ عَمَلاً اَجَلَّ و لا أطیَبَ مِنهُ.
«بحار الأنوار، ج 103، ص 68»

1. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Farm and plant trees. I swear to God that humans have never done anything better than this.”

2- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : النَّظَرُ فی ثَلاثَةِ أشیاءٍ عِبادَةٌ: النَّظَرُ فِی وَجهِ الوالِدَینِ و فِی المُصحَفِ و فِی البَحرِ.
«بحار الأنوار، ج 10، ص 368».

2. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Looking upon three things is a kind of praying to God: parents, Quran, and the sea.

3- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : لا تَطیبُ السُكنی‏ إلّا بِثَلاثٍ: الهَواءِ الطَّیِّبِ وَ الماءِ الغَزیرِ العَذبِ و الأرضِ الخَوّارَةِ.
«تحف العقول، ص 320»

3. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Life is not pleasurable without three things: clean air, plentitude of water, and arable land.

4- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : لا تُحرِقُوا النَّخلَ و لا تُغرِقوهُ بِالماءِ و لا تَقطَعُوا شَجَرَةً مُثمِرَةً و لا تُحرِقُوا زَرعاً لأِنَّكُم لا تَدرونَ لَعَلَّكُم تَحتاجُونَ إلَیهِ.
«الكافی، ج 5، ص 29»

4. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Do not burn out palms or do not drown them in waters. Do not cut out pollinating trees, and do not set fire to farms, because you might need them in future.”

5- قال الامام علی‏ – علیه السلام – : النَّظَرُ إلَی الخُضرَةِ نُشرَةٌ.

5. Imam Ali AS said, “Looking upon grass enlivens.”

6- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : النَّشوَةُ فی عَشَرَةِ أشیاءَ: المَشی و الرُّكُوبِ و الاِرتمِاسِ فِی الماءِ و النَّظَرِ إلَی الخُضرَةِ … .
«الخصال، ص 443»

6. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Ten things cause joy: walking, horse-riding, swimming, looking upon grass, etc.”

7- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : مَن أماطَ عَن طَریقِ المُسلِمینَ ما یُؤذِیهِم، كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ أجرَ قِراءَةَ أربَع مِائةِ آیةٍ كُلُّ حَرفٍ مِنها بِعَشرِ حَسَناتٍ.

7. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Anybody who removes obstacles from Muslims’ pathways, God will reward him with blessings equal to reading four hundred verses of Quran, each being ten times blessed.”

8- قال الامام علی‏ – علیه السلام – : لا تُؤوُوا التُّرابَ خَلفَ البابِ فَإنَّهُ مَأوَی الشَّیاطینِ.

8. Imam Ali AS said, “Do not keep your garbage at the back of your house, because they are places where devils gather.”

9- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : لاتُفسِدْ عَلَی القَومِ ماءَهُم.
«الكافی، ج 3، ص 65»

9. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Do not pollute people’s drinking water.”

10- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : لَقَد كانَ عَلیُّ بنُ الحُسَینِ‏ – علیه السلام – یَمُرُّ عَلَی المَدَرَةِ فی وَسَطِ الطَّریِقِ فَیَنزِلُ عَن دابَّتِهِ حَتّی‏ یُنَحِّیَها بِیَدِهِ عَنِ الطَّریقِ.

10. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Whenever Imam Ali Bin Hossein AS – Shiite’s fourth Imam and the son of Imam Hossein AS – came to a clod while he was walking, he got off from his horse and removed it from the pathway.”

11- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : مَن نَصَبَ شَجَرَةً و صَبَرَ عَلی‏ حِفظِها والِقیامِ عَلَیها حَتّی‏ تُثمِرَ كانَ لَهُ فی كُلِّ شَی‏ءٍ یُصابُ مِن ثَمَرِها صَدَقَةٌ عِندَ اللَّهِ.
«میزان الحكمه، ح 9143».

11. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Whoever, plants a tree and takes care of it till it bears fruit, God will bless him for whatever that is made out of that fruit.”

12- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : لاتَقطَعُوا الثِّمارَ فَیَبعَثَ اللَّهُ عَلَیكُم العَذابَ صَبًّا.
«الكافی، ج 5، ص 294»

12. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Do not cut out fruit-bearing trees, because God will punish you for it.”

13- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : ما مِن مُسلِمٍ یَغرِسُ غَرسَاً أو یزَرَعُ زَرعَاً، فَیأكُلُ مِنهُ إنسانٌ أوطَیرٌ أو بَهیمَةٌ إلاّ كانَت لَهُ بِهِ صَدَقَةٌ.

13. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Any Muslim who plants a tree or a sprout, out of which animals and birds feed, it will be considered alms for him.”

14- قال الامام علی‏ – علیه السلام – للاشتر نخعی: وَلیَكُن نَظَرُك فی عِمارَةِ الأرضِ أبلَغَ مِن نَظَرِكَ فی استِجلابِ الخَراجِ لأِنَّ ذلِكَ لایُدرَكُ إلّا بِالعِمارَةِ.

14. Imam Ali AS said to Malik Ashtar, one of his closest friends and companions, “More attention should be dedicated to farming than taxing, because taxing is only possible when the lands are cultivated.”

15- قال الامام الباقر – علیه السلام – : خَیرُ الأعمالِ الحَرثُ.
«میزان الحكمه، ح 7545»

15. Imam Baqer AS said, “Farming is the best of deeds.”

16- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : الكِیمیاءُ الأكبَرُ الزِّراعَةُ.
«الكافی، ج 5، ص 261»

16. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Farming is the best alchemy.”

17- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : ما فِی الأعمالِ شَی‏ءٌ أحَبُّ إلَی اللَّهِ تَعالی‏ مِنَ الزِّراعَةِ.

17. Imam Sadeq AS said, “There is no activity more favored by God than farming.”

18- قال الامام الصادق‏ – علیه السلام – : الزّارِعُونَ كُنوزُ الأنامِ.
«الكافی، ج 5، ص 261»

18. Imam Sadeq AS said, “Farmers are people’s treasures.”

19- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : إن قامَتِ السَّاعَةُ و فِی یَدِ أحَدِكُم فَسیلَةٌ، فإنِ استَطاعَ أنْ لا یَقومَ حَتّی‏ یَغرِسَها، فَلیَغرِسْها.
«كنزالعمّال، ح 9056»

19. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “If the Day of Resurrection arrives, and one of you has a sprout in his hand, he should be planting it first.”

20- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : ما مِن رَجُلٍ یَغرِسُ غَرساً إلاّ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجرِ قَدرَ ما یَخرُجُ مِن ثَمَرِ ذلِكَ الغَرسِ.
«كنزالعمّال، ح 9057»

20. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Anybody who plants a tree, God will reward and bless him for whatever fruit that is achieved out of that tree.”

21- قال رسول الله – صلی الله علیه و آله – : اُطلُبوا الرِّزقَ فی خَبایا الأرضِ.
«كنزالعمّال، ح 9302»

21. The Prophet of Islam PBUH said, “Seek sustenance from what is buried within land.”
