Why do the Shia pray at three times while the Sunni pray at five times?
Question:
Why do the Shia pray at three times while the Sunni pray at five times?
Answer:
1- Quranic Verses:
The reason the Shia perform their prayers at three times is the Quranic verses and traditions on the matter. Although the Quran has mentioned that prayer is obligatory several times and hasn’t gone into the details, it has spoken of its times: “Maintain the prayer from the sun’s decline till the darkness of the night, and [observe particularly] the dawn recital. Indeed the dawn recital is attended [by the angels of day and night]” (17:78). Therefore, the Quran has listed three times for the prayer, not five.
2- Traditions:
1-There is a hadith that discloses that the prophet (PBUH) prayed Zuhr and Asr together, as he did with Maghrib and Isha. He was asked about this and he answered: “I did so in order for my nation not to be under the burden of hardship.”.
2- It has also been narrated that the prophet prayed Zuhr and Asr, and Maghrib and Isha together, while not being fearful of anything (compelling him to do so) or travelling.
3- Imam Sadiq (as): “When the sun reaches its highest and begins to decline (zawal), it is time for Zuhr and Asr, the only thing is that Zuhr must be performed before Asr. You are then free to perform them any time you like until sunset.
5- Muslim narrates that the prophet performed Zuhr and Asr, and Maghrib and Isha together in his journey in the battle of Tabuk. Sa’id ibn Jubair says: “I asked Ibn Abbas for the reason, he replied: “The prophet (pbuh) didn’t want his nation to be under the burden of hardship.”
There are of course many other hadiths from the prophet (PBUH) and Sunni scholars on the permissibility of performing prayers together even when not travelling or when there is no danger.
To wrap it up, we must say that clearly it is better to pray each prayer separately and at five times, nevertheless, in contrast with the Sunni viewpoint, such a thing isn’t obligatory. The reason behind why there is a difference of opinion between Shia and the Sunni schools of thought regarding this issue goes back to where each go to get their Islamic teachings and rulings; the Shia refer to the Ahlul-Bayt (the prophet’s household) who have said that the time for Zuhr and Asr extends from Zuhr time till sunset. Also, the generality of the verse: “اقم الصلاة لدلوک الشمس الی غسق اللیل ” is another reason for their claim. Of course, it shouldn’t be left unsaid that each prayer has a time in which performing it then is recommended and mustahabb, bearing great rewards.
According to the traditions of the prophet and Imam (PBUH), it is mustahabb (recommended) to pray the daily prayers at five times, although performing them together (Zuhr and Asr together and Maghrib and Isha together) is also permissible. So it is permissible although separating them is mustahabb.

Salam Alaykum
it is obvious that everyone thinks his own religion is the true one
but what prove it, is the logic and divine reasons
for example people who believe in a man as a God, think they are true
but it can be proved in many ways that a man can’t be a God
if you say Shia is wrong and your religion that you didn’t mention, is true
that would be nice if you tell me top 5 reasons that prove Shia is not true
thanks
it seems there are many wrong thoughts about Shia among Sunni brothers!
we follow the same Quran you follow
Shia Quran is not different from your Quran
it is provable
Shia never add or omit even a word from the Quran, so we have same book and we follow the messenger of this book as you do, I mean Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Shias are not different in everything, Shia and Sunni have many many common points
for example same God, same prophet, same book, same words in Salaat (Prayer), Same Salawat, same Halal, same Haraam …..
Shias also do prayers in five time, but in this article it is proved by Sunni Hadith that doing it in three times is not wrong because it is told that sometimes the Prophet did it. did the prophet do anything wrong or against the Quran?? no, so Shia didn’t change the Prophet and the Quran teachings
Shia never believe in Imams more than Allah or the Prophet. it is completely wrong. Allah is the greatest, then the prophet, then Imams who are sent by God to guide people after the prophet and not letting people to change the Prophet’s religion like what happened after Jesus (PBUH) or Moses (PBUH). Imams are respectful for Shia because they are mentioned by the prophet to be followed. so Shia again didn’t do anything against the prophet’s will
I mention again, Shia never trust in Imams more than Allah or the prophet
Shia also seek the truth, Shia don’t follow Islam of Iran or Indonesia or Saudi Arabia …., Shia follows the Quran and the prophet’s hadith
Allah be with you
